United Airlines Supports Breast Cancer Awareness

Month with Pink Program

CHICAGO, Oct. 1, 2013 – United Airlines employees are showing their support for Breast Cancer Awareness by sporting pink uniform items and accessories throughout the month of October. In its fifth year, United’s Pink Program allows employees to purchase exclusively produced pink items to wear at work – including ties, neck scarves and hats – with proceeds benefitting nonprofit organizations dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness and providing greater access to breast cancer screening and support services.

“Many of our co-workers and their friends and family members have been impacted by breast cancer and are very passionate about the cause,” said Nancy Van Duyne, United’s vice president of Congressional affairs and co-executive sponsor of the 2013 Pink Program. “By proudly wearing our pink, we are not only showing our support for our co-workers and their families, but we are also supporting organizations that provide valuable breast cancer services in communities across the globe.”

Since 2009, United employees from around the world have participated in the Pink Program, raising more than $100,000 for breast cancer awareness – the equivalent of supplying nearly 400 mammograms to under-insured or uninsured women. Together with employees, the Pink Program and other United-sponsored efforts have raised more than $2 million for nonprofit organizations serving individuals affected by breast cancer and their families.

Proceeds for this year’s Pink Program will benefit:

• A Silver Lining Foundation: Provides free mammograms in the Chicago area with the Buy Mom a Mammogram™ program and quality of life assistance during treatment.

• Cancer Institute of New Jersey: Provides outreach and education services including programs at the LIFE Center, teaching young women how to maintain breast health and reduce the factors that increase their risk of breast cancer.

• Denver Health Foundation: Provides cervical and breast cancer screening, including digital mammography, via the Women’s Mobile Clinic. The Mobile Clinic serves the Denver area and is designed to help reduce barriers to cancer screening that many women experience.

• Living Beyond Breast Cancer: Provides national educational programs and services for the newly diagnosed, young women, women with advanced breast cancer, women at high risk for developing the disease and African-American and Latina women across the U.S.

• Run for the Cure Foundation: Develops and executes community outreach programs that provide education, timely screening and treatment to eradicate breast cancer in Japan.

• Sisters Network: Provides educational outreach and advocacy training for the African-American community from chapters located throughout the U.S.

• The Rose: Provides mammography screening, diagnosis, access to treatment and support to all women in the Houston area regardless of their ability to pay.

• Women’s Cancer Resource Center: Creates opportunities for women to improve their quality of life through education, support services and practical assistance. All services are free and open to women with any cancer, from all backgrounds, economic abilities and ethnicities.
